G&G GMS 13.5″ AEG Motor Overheating – Brushless Motor Upgrade
Airsoft Repair Case: resolving excessive motor heat on a G&G GMS 13.5″ AEG by upgrading from a conventional brushed motor to a more efficient brushless motor.
Brand: G&G Armament
Model: GMS 13.5″ AEG
Service Date: March 15, 2026
Problem: Motor overheating during operation
Solution: Brushless motor upgrade
Customer-Reported Problem
The G&G GMS 13.5″ AEG was experiencing excessive motor heat during operation. The motor became unusually hot, raising concerns about long-term reliability and possible damage to internal components. The rifle featured a PERUN MOSFET / ETU system with multiple programmable firing modes and was powered by an 11.1V LiPo battery, a common configuration in modern performance-oriented AEGs.
What We Found
AEG technology has improved significantly over the years. Modern MOSFET and electronic trigger systems offer faster trigger response, programmable firing modes, and more precise control over shooting performance. However, many AEGs still rely on traditional brushed motors, which use essentially the same operating principles developed decades ago. In our repair experience, we have observed that some electronically controlled AEGs experience rapid motor heat buildup when using conventional brushed motors. Brushed motors rely on carbon brushes and a mechanical commutator to transfer electrical power. This design produces friction, electrical losses, and heat during operation. As modern AEGs offer faster response and increasingly sophisticated firing functions, the efficiency of the motor becomes an important consideration.
For this G&G GMS 13.5″ AEG, the original brushed motor was experiencing excessive heat buildup. Upgrading to a brushless motor resolved the problem.
Modern MOSFET / ETU systems and 11.1V LiPo batteries are established technologies that offer significant performance benefits. However, conventional brushed motors can become an efficiency and thermal limitation in certain high-performance AEG configurations. Rather than reducing the rifle’s capabilities, upgrading to a properly matched brushless motor can provide a more efficient and reliable solution.
Repair and Upgrade Work Completed
- Original brushed motor replaced to address excessive heat generation.
- Brushless motor installed to improve electrical efficiency and thermal performance.
- Moderate-speed 25K model selected to maintain a reasonable balance between performance and gearbox reliability.
- Motor operation checked following the upgrade.
Why Can Traditional Brushed Motors Overheat?
Conventional brushed motors have been used in AEGs for decades. Although they remain affordable and capable of reliable performance, their design has inherent limitations. The carbon brushes maintain physical contact with the commutator while the motor operates. This creates friction, electrical losses, and wear. As the motor repeatedly starts, stops, and operates under load, heat can accumulate. Modern electronic trigger systems can make these demands more noticeable, particularly during rapid semi-automatic shooting and repeated firing cycles. While a properly selected high-quality brushed motor can still perform well, brushless motors offer an alternative with greater potential efficiency and reduced heat generation.
Why Upgrade to a Brushless Motor?
Unlike traditional brushed motors, brushless motors use electronic commutation rather than physical carbon brushes. Eliminating carbon brushes reduces mechanical wear and certain electrical losses, allowing the motor to operate more efficiently under suitable conditions. The potential advantages include:
- Improved efficiency: Less energy wasted during motor operation.
- Reduced heat buildup: Better thermal performance during repeated shooting.
- Consistent performance: Efficient and responsive operation under normal shooting loads.
- Longer service life: No carbon brushes to wear out or require replacement.
The purpose of this upgrade was not to achieve the highest possible rate of fire. We selected a moderate-speed brushless motor to improve efficiency while avoiding unnecessary additional stress on the gearbox. Compatibility between the brushless motor and the rifle’s MOSFET / ETU settings must also be considered, particularly when electronic braking functions are involved.
Final Result
After replacing the original brushed motor with a brushless motor, the excessive overheating problem was resolved. The rifle retained its advanced electronic firing capabilities while benefiting from improved motor efficiency and reduced heat buildup. This repair illustrates an important consideration in modern AEG performance: as electronic control systems continue to evolve, motor efficiency and compatibility should not be overlooked.
